Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. Treatments include.
Impaction surgeryInvolves surgical extraction of teeth which are embedded inside the jaw bone, mostly the third molar (Wisdom teeth).
Canine impaction surgeryCanine impactions are mostly seen in patients with small arch (jaw) space. Due to lack of space, the canine doesn’t erupt in to the oral cavity and will remain embedded inside the jaw bone. Most of the time, these canine are exposed and brought into alignment with other teeth with the help of Orthodontic treatment (braces). But in some cases, this is not possible and the tooth needs to be extracted.
Extraction of Odontomes / Supernumerary teethSimilar to canine and molar impaction, a tooth like structure (Odontomes) or an extra tooth will either be seen in the oral cavity or will be embedded inside the jaw bone. Most of the time, these will not be noticed during a regular dental check up and are found when X- rays are been taken. As, these teeth might lead to resorption of adjacent tooth structures, they are indicated for surgical extraction.
ApicectomyIt is a surgical procedure used to remove the apical third of the root portion of the tooth infected with severe periapical infection or cyst.
